Five pillars of islam

Sana's dad came into school to speak to us about the five pillars of islam. The 1st pillar is SHADAH that means you have to believe there is only one God. Mohamed is the messenger. Muslims still believe in heaven and hell like Christians do.We found it really interesting. the second pillar is Prayer, it is a time where you talk to God this is another similarity between Christianity and Muslim. Christians pray to God as well. Also they have to pray five times a day! Sunrise, afternoon , mid afternoon, dusk and last of all evening. The third pillar is Charity. Muslims have to count up their money that they have earned and they have to donate 2.5% (if the have £100 then that would be £2.50) they only donate if they have over £800

5 pillars of islam!!!

Today class N and class h we all had a guest in the two class's the guest was one of the pupils dads.
He was telling us all about what the 5 pillars of Islam means.
The 1st pillar the Shadah. The 2nd pillar is the salah (pray). The 3rd pillar is the zakah (charity) The 4th pillar saum (fasting). The 5th pillar is the hajj (pilgrimage). we had to write lots of notes why sanas dad was talking to us. We learnt lots about the five pillars and we thought it was interesting!
Thank You for coming in.

Today in school we have been learning about how light reflects on different mirrors including:concave, convex and slanted. In French we are doing presentations about climate in France and Famous people in France and all sorts of presentations too.

By Zahrah and Rahul
This week in maths we have been learning about time.We have been working on digital and anolog and how to read them for some of us it was difficult and the others it was queit easy.We needed to know the diffrence between 24 hour clock and 12 hour clock. It was very hard for me because there is so much to remember and you can easily get it all mixed up! I thought it was quiet easy because with the 1ns and the 2 s and so on you could just know that it was 1:00 or somthing like that and with the 24 hour digital like 16:00 you would know that becouse you could count on your fingers 13,14,15,16 you could say 1 is 13 2 is 14 3 is 15 and 4 is 16.

slanted ,concave and covex mirrors

This week we have been learning about slanted, convex and concave mirrors and where the light reflects(bounces) off them.

Slanted Mirror-
When a source of light hits a slanted mirror in a straight line, the light bounces of in a equal direction of the mirror.

Concave Mirror-
A concave mirror is where the mirror goes in.How i remeber is it goes in like a cave. When a source of light in a straight line, hits a concave mirror it it reflects in the oppesite direction.

Convex Mirror-
A convex mirror is where it goes outwards. When a straight line of light hits the convex mirror the light reflects in every angle.

Our Astounding Footballers

A huge, hearty well done to our girls' football team who competed so brilliantly at the Girls' Football Borough Final at Powerleague on Tuesday. Despite the cold, damp weather everyone gave 100% on the pitch and we all had a great day.

After a useful coaching session in the morning, the team played a series of matches through the rest of the day, scoring enough points to make it through to an exciting semi-final, which they coasted through, and a final match against Woodley, who played superbly to win the competition. Our girls were thrilled to take the second place spot, and are determined to return next year and go one better!

Thank you and well done once again to all the players who came along to represent St John's - you all behaved and competed brilliantly and it was a pleasure to take you along.

Thank you also to the competition organisers, and to the parents who helped with lifts or came along to the show their support. Big thanks also, of course, go to our coaches, Clayton and Kelly, both of whom have done lots of work with the girls over the last few months.

Just a reminder that our girls' football club is open to ALL girls from Year 3 to Year 6 and happens after school every Monday, from 3:15 to 4:30. Subs are £2 each week. We're hoping to organise more matches against other Stockport schools for the new year, so let's try and get even more of our girls involved in football at school!

a great big 4! by megan

today after school we went to Broadstone hall primary to play a match of football;
first we got changed into our football kits at school and sorted out which car we were going in and we set off to the match.
then we met Clayton (our coach) and we got told our positions and the whistle went!
i was playing on the right wing and was doing really well until a Broadstone player kicked my bad ankle that i had sprained the week before so i slowed up a little bit as my ankle started to hurt. grace came to the rescue and sped down the right wing and was man of the match from then on! she got one goal out of the great big four that we had so she played the best of all of us!!
Broadstone kept making out that we fouled them and they managed to get one goal which was unfair but they are not going to power league in november for a match towards a trophy so that is alright!

We all rotated and did every activity before lunch so we all found an object or two during the morning!

Next we had lunch back in the parish centre and played outside if we wanted to and then we gathered our belongings and set off to do a 'History Mystery Trail!'

then we got onto the coach and set off on our long journey home and we headed back to Stockport!

Kilimanjaro

kilimanjaro facts
  • kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the world’s highest free-standing mountain.
  • Kilimanjaro lies 205 miles South of the equator and stands on Tanzania’s northern border with Kenya.
  • - Kilimanjaro supports 5 major eco-zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers.
  • The name Kilimanjaro has no certain origin, but one of the most popular theories is that it came from KILMA NJARO meaning “shining mountain” in Swahili. The shiny snow on the peak led nearby residents to believe that evil spirits guarded the mountain. This myth could also explain why some referred to NJARO Bulleted List

- Because they saw fellow tribe members attempt the climb only to disappear or to return deformed from frostbite, the Chagga people—who live at the base of the mountain—for centuries had no desire to climb the mountain they believed was full of evil spirits.

mount kilomanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. It was formed 500000 years ago.
Mount Kilimanjaro

1 Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the largest stratovolcanoes in the world.
2The last eruptions on the mountain were between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago.

Art week

Tuesday 30Th June '09

This week at ST.John's we are having an Art week. It will take place all week except Friday;which is sports day.

yesterday afternoon, after dinner we were split up into eight different groups. Group five; which is currently doing can people were doing scarecrows. We had to design five different scarecrows. Two were members of staff, Mrs.Ames and Mr.stocks,we supposed to keep this a secret from them until it's finished , so keep it down. The other three are supposed to represent the children of ST. John's.The way we had to make it was a bit weird but interesting in its own way. first of all we had to stuff a suit full of plastic bag then dress it. It was different Every time for instant, Mrs.Ames were dress up in what she would wear normally. Another group would make peoples faces by using balloons, bits of newspaper and PVA glue. We didn't get to Finnish but that's normally the case with these days because the it works on a rotor so one group dose an activity which an other group done.

The second day of Art week group five were making can people. we basically got tin cans and cut out lost and spare parts of uniform which people didn't want, need or lost. We had spare jumpers polo shirts and trousers. When finished they looked fantasic.

On thursday we are going to be doing to make a village for the play.

First we listened to people talking about cutting wood in the past. They showed us how to cut wood with old machines. Next we went to the Heaton Mersey park to do some maypole dancing. We had to hold a strip of material which was a certain colour and started to plait it. Then we did the same but the other way to unplait it. We then had to go back to the Mersey Vale park to do some pond dipping. When we got there we got put into two groups and the first group did the pond dipping part and some people caught tadpoles and newts! Then the next thing was getting bugs out from a tray of water and putting them in containers to look at their skeleton with the microscope looking at it on the TV. We also did some willow weaving. Finally we did an art activity which involved drawing on a piece of polystyrene and then covering it with black paint and printing it on paper and material.

Arts and crafts

This term at St. Johns, all of the school will be having an arts and crafts theme. Seeing as the world is in the climate that it is, we will be using recycled materials. So far, we have been weaving with paper, hessian and binker. So far, no recycled materials. We have also been asked to bring in interesting recycled materials. Some of the collected items include cake boxes, wellington boots and yogurt pots.
Coming next: Bird feeders and insect boxes.
The paper weaving: First, get a brown piece
of paper, any size. Then, draw lines a ruler's
width from the edge in a rectangle. Draw lines
a ruler's width apart in that rectangle. Cut
straight along them. Next, get coloured strips
of paper. Weave(slide) them under and over
the holes in the brown piece of paper. When you
have done that, cut any excess paper off and
glue the ends of the coloured paper to the brown
paper. Ta-da! A paper pattern, made by you.

A whole KS2 performance, we have had modelling lessons, set up a catwalk, made our own rubbish clothes, and prepared for the ultimate trashion showdown!

No energy day

Yesterday at St John's school we had a no energy day. We could use no electricity and no heating! For lights we used tiny candles, for school dinners we had cold baguettes, and the teachers couldn't use their laptops! Channel M (Virgin 878 Sky 203) came along and interviewed some of us. Also, a photographer and reporter from the M.E.N (Manchester evening news) came along and did the same and took our pictures. you can see us at http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/video/hprc/15/3/publicationdate/MEN%20news today, but over the next few days it will go to pages before that. The point of the no energy day was to see what would happen if we tried to save lots of resources. Didn't look that good, though. So the best way to save energy is not to not use it, but to not use as much.

SAT presentations

Last week our headteacher, Mrs. Ames, made Class N do a presentation on 2006 science SAT paper A page 16 question 7. Every table did their own thing, including low-budget productions, PowerPoint prresentations, TV shows and demonstrations. The question sees Josh and Safia put a cold plate with ice cubes on top on a bowl of hot water. Soon water drips from the plate. If the ice cubes melt the water cannot seep through the plate. Why did the droplets appear? Quite simple if you understand evaporation and condensation.
